Calibration lab

Calibration lab

The calibration facility is used to calibrate and monitor the various optical instruments operated by the RSSRG. The aim is to link the calibration back to NIST standards.

Equipment in the room includes:

  • 2 x Optronic Laboratories Inc High-accuracy Spectral Irradiance Standard globes:
  • OL FEL–M (250nm – 1100nm). Serial # F–722
  • OL FEL–M (250nm – 1100nm). Serial # F–793 @ 8.000 Amperes
  • Optics Table
  • Spectralon Plates (100% and 20%)
  • Mounting equipment and baffles
  • Lasers (Argon, HeNe, green diode)
  • Ocean Optics HG–1 Mercury Argon Calibration Source
  • Black matte curtains and coverings.

The WETStar is a mini fluorometer that measures chlorophyll concentrations between a range of 0.03 and 75µg/L. The instrument was purchased in 2005 and is rated to a depth of 600m.

HydroRad-2 hyperspectral radiometer

Purchased in 2002, the HydroRad-2 is a hyperspectral radiometer that can measure radiance and irradiance within a spectral range of 350nm to 850nm. The radiometer is rated to a maximum depth of 200m.

HydroRad hyperspectral radiometer

HydroScat

HydroScat-6P backscattering and fluorescence sensor

HOBI labs

The HydroScat-6P is a 6 channel backscattering sensor and fluorometer. Backscattering channels are available at 420, 442, 470, 510, 590 and 700nm and the channels chosen for fluorescence are the 700nm that is excited by the 442nm and the 510nm excited by the 420nm. The instrument was purchased in 2011 and is rated to a maximum depth of 330m.

A portable, optical sensor used to measure Leaf Area Index (LAI). Two sensor wands are available with viewing caps to provide azimuthal masking at 10°, 45°, 90°, 180°, and 270°. The instrument was purchased in 2011.

Transmissometer

WET labs

A 650nm LED light source operates along a 25cm pathlength transmissometer to measure underwater beam transmittance. Loss of beam transmittance can be due to suspended particles, phytoplankton, CDOM in the water column. The instrument was purchased in 2005.
